Platelet Rich Plasma
It wasn’t so long ago that the only options people had for ‘younger looking skin’ was a bottle of Ulay! These days the choices available for keeping age at bay can be bewildering. Everything from full-scale invasive surgery to simple dermal filler injections in your lunch break, there are a myriad of ways to stay looking young. One of the most recent and increasingly popular is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. This can sometimes be referred to as The Vampire Facelift®, but its name is only half the story. This treatment is great for reducing wrinkles, firming the skin but it’s also fantastic for stimulating hair growth for those who have had recently had a hair transplant. It uses the body’s own natural healing mechanism to bring non-invasive cosmetic surgery to new heights.
During the procedure, the doctor will take around 30ml of the patient’s own blood, hence the name Vampire Facelift®. The blood contains platelets, the cells needed to heal damaged tissue. Once separated in a centrifuge, the platelets are exposed to calcium chloride to form a gel-like substance. This is then injected back into the face in very specific areas. The gel effectively tricks the body into thinking there has been an injury which allows new tissue to grow. Depending on where the treatment is targeted, it creates new collagen (the chemical that gives skin its strength), new blood vessels, new fatty tissue (for smoothness) in the skin and can even generate new hair follicles on the top of the head. As it’s derived from the patient’s own blood, there is no risk of rejection and gives the patient new, younger-looking skin.
Over the next 2-3 months the skin will continue to rejuvenate and the effect can last anywhere between 1 and 2 years! It can be used to treat a number of areas including nasolabial folds, or smile lines, and other unwanted wrinkles on the face. It is also great to improve the quality of the skin making it youthful. One reason why so many people are using this treatments is, unlike other similar procedures, the only substance being injected into your skin is your own cells, no foreign bodies are used or needed.
Platelet Rich Plasma FAQ
Q. How long is the downtime following treatment?
A. There is very little downtime, if at all. As the treatment only involves injections and leaves no scaring on the face, patients can return to their normal daily routine immediately. Also, because the injections are derived from your own blood, there is no chance of adverse reactions or rejection.
Q. Are the effects obvious immediately?
A. You skin will improve noticeably over the following 2-3 weeks as the new collagen starts to grow. This will continue in the weeks and months that follow. In this time, you will generate more healthy cells making your skin look younger, fuller and visibly rejuvenated.
Q. What are the side effects?
A. These will vary by patient, although most people suffer no problems at all. As with any cosmetic procedure, you may experience mild bruising around the injected areas (caused by the injection itself) but this can be easily covered up with make-up.
