Botox®

Botulinum toxin A, also commonly referred to as Botox, is a protein and neurotoxin produced by the bacterium ‘clostridium botulinum’. It all sounds very dangerous and a little scary but as a cosmetic treatment, it’s perfectly safe.

Botox® is purely a brand-name, manufactured in the United States by Allergan Inc, the world’s leading approved supplier of the drug for cosmetic treatments but is certainly not the only name that may be familiar with. Various other companies manufacture similar chemicals, but Botox® is the most recognisable. With the recognition it’s received in recent years, it may seem like it’s been around forever. In fact, the use of the drug for removing wrinkles only dates back to 1989 and wasn’t approved for cosmetic procedures until as recently as 2002.

The toxin that forms Botox® is also used to treat a wide range of medical conditions. Botox® works by blocking the neurological signals that normally tell your muscles to contract. Put simply, if the muscles can’t move, they can’t wrinkle, so for a period of time they can not ‘scrunch up’, so any lines will disappear.

The effects can be amazing, making you look younger and feel fantastic. The treatment usually only takes around 15 – 20 minutes (initial treatments may take a little longer) and involves a small amount of injectable liquid being placed under the skin. This can be used to smooth out wrinkles, glabellar (frown lines) or crow’s feet and indeed many other areas.

If there’s a particular issue you want help with, we’re here to assist you.

Botox FAQ

Q. Are there different brands of botulinum toxin?
A. Yes. There are six main brands of botulinum toxin; Azzalure, Dysport, Botox, Vistabel, Boccuture and Xeomin. All have very similar effects and are made by well-known pharmaceuticals companies. At Luxe Skin Clinic Glasgow we only use products from these reputable, world-renowned brands, so you can be sure you are dealing with the very best products available.

Q. What happens during Botox or botulinum toxin treatment?
A. A small amount of liquid is injected into the muscles of the face using a very fine needle. You may feel a small sensation as the injections are applied but Dr Qureshi is very confident about his technique and you will feel very little discomfort.

Q. How soon after the treatment will I see the effect?
A. It depends on the patient, but it can take up to 2 weeks for the full effects to appear.

Q. How long do the effects last?
A. They typically last between 3 – 4 months, although some people have told us they have seen the effects lasting up to 6 months. For maximum benefit, most clients have 3-4 treatments a year as the effect will last longer with repeat treatments.
