Synthetic vs. Natural Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can be used to solve a variety of issues related to the face. They can plump out wrinkles and creases, creating a smoother and fuller appearance, enhance and define features, and generally, increase the volume of the areas under the skin. There are two groups of dermal fillers – synthetic and natural. Synthetic fillers last much longer than naturally derived ones and are considered to be more permanent, whilst the natural variety has immediate results but these will dissipate over time.

So what are synthetic and natural dermal fillers?

Botox is well known for reducing facial creases and lines for several months after treatment. It works by blocking nerve signals that cause facial muscles to contract and from lines. This anti-wrinkle injectable procedure can delay and prevent the signs of aging as it leaves muscles unable to crease the skin.

Xeomin works just like Botox but it doesn’t contain extra additives, so lowers the risk of treatment failure. It relaxes facial muscles and distressing frown lines and is a safe and effective way to counter crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles. Results have been known to last from three to six months.

Juvederm is biodegradable synthetic filler which contains hyaluronic acid as its active ingredient, promoting skin hydration and encouraging healthy skin. For about six months to a year after treatment, skin will appear more youthful as areas are plumped up and fine lines eradicated.

Radiesse is a synthetic dermal filler that contains a mineral that’s naturally present in the body –calcium hydroxyapatite. It smooths and plumps the skin as well as being suitable for some types of scarring, and results can last for up to a year. Any redness and swelling produced by the treatment reduce after a few hours.

Perlane is a gentle injectable filler used to treat facial, folds and wrinkles. With hyaluronic acid in its composition, it provides a more natural volume and fullness to the skin. The three-dimensional gel particles attract and bind water molecules as they degrade, helping to maintain plumpness for about six months.

Fat grafting for facial rejuvenation involves taking fat from one area of the body and transferring it to another. The fatty tissue removed by liposuction is then processed and injected into the areas where volume and enhancement are needed. The body is less likely to reject its own fat cells, and the risk of inflammation is reduced, although the results may only be temporary, and further treatments will be necessary.

Natural substances used as fillers are derived either from human bodies or from animals, so collagen is a natural protein and comes from cows, pigs, or humans. Fat derived from the patient’s own body is another example. Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate produced in human bodies and also derived from an animal source – so this would also be considered a natural filler.

Synthetic injections work within the muscles, blocking nerve signals and are most suitable for those without any health issues such as heart disease or chronic health problems.

If you decide to embark on a dermal filler process, you’ll need to discuss all your options with a professional to ensure you get the maximum benefits of fast results with long-lasting effects! Bear in mind that the best filler substance depends on your facial needs and risk tolerance, and the skills, experience, and technique of your physician. Thanks Dr. Q!

Dr. Q has done my lip fillers and wrinkle reduction. Lots of people tell me I’m looking really well but my look is natural so they don’t always guess I’ve had any work done and that’s exactly what I wanted. Dr. Q listens well and therefore provides the look you want. Nice relaxed atmosphere in the clinic. Treatments are painless (I use anaesthetic cream for lip fillers). The clinic is clean and bright. Love my little visits!
